Ice streams are an expression of the inherent instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and their behavior is a key control on the overall ice-sheet mass balance. Understanding the response of the ice sheet in a warming climate requires a thorough understanding of the internal dynamics of ice streams, in addition to the relevant ice-atmosphere and ice-ocean interactions in the region. The basal environment of the ice streams and of many glaciers is a key scientific interest, including conditions, mainly basal sliding, that lead to fast flow of the ice. The purpose of this data set is to present a review of the full range of original video recordings from the basal ice of the Kamb Ice Stream. Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) |
The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) participated in an airborne radar survey using a BT-67 Basler aircraft over the Siple Coast of Antarctica. Five personnel deployed from November 29, 2013 to January 18, 2014 with USAP project# I-189-M. The major objective was to collect fine-resolution radar data with an ultra-wideband MCoRDS4 UHF/VHF radar depth sounder in conjunction with data from two microwave (Ku-band and Snow) radars and a Google Camera. This dataset includes reflection profiles for the three radars and ice surface and ice bottom picks for the radar depth sounder. | ["POLYGON((163.884 -76.567,171.5583 -76.567,179.2326 -76.567,186.9069 -76.567,194.5812 -76.567,202.2555 -76.567,209.9298 -76.567,217.6041 -76.567,225.2784 -76.567,232.9527 -76.567,240.627 -76.567,240.627 -77.3847,240.627 -78.2024,240.627 -79.0201,240.627 -79.8378,240.627 -80.6555,240.627 -81.4732,240.627 -82.2909,240.627 -83.1086,240.627 -83.9263,240.627 -84.744,232.9527 -84.744,225.2784 -84.744,217.6041 -84.744,209.9298 -84.744,202.2555 -84.744,194.5812 -84.744,186.9069 -84.744,179.2326 -84.744,171.5583 -84.744,163.884 -84.744,163.884 -83.9263,163.884 -83.1086,163.884 -82.2909,163.884 -81.4732,163.884 -80.6555,163.884 -79.8378,163.884 -79.0201,163.884 -78.2024,163.884 -77.3847,163.884 -76.567))"] | ["POINT(-157.7445 -80.6555)"] | false | false |
Videos of Basal Ice in Boreholes on the Kamb Ice Stream in West Antarctica

Basal Conditions of Ice Stream D and Related Borehole Studies of Antarctic Ice Stream Mechanics |
This data set is a collection of video data of basal ice taken in a borehole on the Kamb Ice Stream in West Antarctica. Direct observations at the ice-stream bed are a crucial complement to modeling efforts predicting future scenarios in a warming climate. | ["POINT(-136.404633 -82.39955)"] | ["POINT(-136.404633 -82.39955)"] | false | false |

These data consist of ice-penetrating radar data collected on the ground across the grounding line near Siple Dome during the 2006 and 2007 Antarctic summer field seasons. Primarily, the data consist of low-frequency radar data (2 MHz, approximately 50 meter resolution) in order to observe deep internal layers and the ice-bed interface. The data set also contains one file with high-frequency (100 MHz, approximately 1 meter resolution) radar data, for a sub-region of one of the low-frequency radar profiles. Coincident kinematic GPS data were also collected to correct the radar data for topography along each profile. Radar profiles are typically approximately 20 km in length with the grounding line crossed centrally where possible. Data are available via FTP in Matlab (.mat) format. | ["POLYGON((-160 -81,-158.5 -81,-157 -81,-155.5 -81,-154 -81,-152.5 -81,-151 -81,-149.5 -81,-148 -81,-146.5 -81,-145 -81,-145 -81.2,-145 -81.4,-145 -81.6,-145 -81.8,-145 -82,-145 -82.2,-145 -82.4,-145 -82.6,-145 -82.8,-145 -83,-146.5 -83,-148 -83,-149.5 -83,-151 -83,-152.5 -83,-154 -83,-155.5 -83,-157 -83,-158.5 -83,-160 -83,-160 -82.8,-160 -82.6,-160 -82.4,-160 -82.2,-160 -82,-160 -81.8,-160 -81.6,-160 -81.4,-160 -81.2,-160 -81))"] | ["POINT(-152.5 -82)"] | false | false |

The project was part of a larger study to assess the likelihood of ice stream reactivation. Parameters include latitude, longitude, distance along profile, ice thickness pick, bright layer depth, and surface elevation, from approximately 1600 km of ground-based radar traverses recorded during the 2004 and 2005 Antarctic field seasons. This data set includes ice motion and topography measurements that were taken by measuring movement and altitude of poles set in the West Antarctic Ice Shelf. The data was acquired by Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of poles. The position of the poles was measured twice; once in 2000, and again in 2002. Movement of the poles in that time show the ice motion velocity and direction. GPS pole positions are given in latitude and longitude, and elevations are given in meters above the WGS1984 ellipsoid. The data are presented as tables in ASCII text files. Three maps of the area are included with the data tables.
