Abstract
This dataset contains measurements of bulk tissue carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, compound-specific amino acid carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, and calculated relative trophic positions from modern (2000–2016) and historical (1841–1995) breast feather samples of Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae). Samples were collected across multiple sites in the Ross Sea and Antarctic Peninsula regions of Antarctica. Historical feathers were sampled from museum study skin collections across 18 institutions, and modern feathers were collected from live-captured individuals or molted feather samples.Bulk stable isotope analysis (SIA) was conducted using elemental analyzer continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-CF-IRMS). Compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) was performed using gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) for up to fourteen individual amino acids. Relative trophic position (TP) was calculated using baseline-corrected multi-trophic discrimination factor equations derived from glutamic acid and phenylalanine nitrogen stable isotope values. Details of the dataset, analytical methods, and ecological interpretations are provided in Michelson et al. 2026, Marine Ecology Progress Series, DOI: 10.3354/meps152331.
