The temperatures, pressures and lack of light all select for organisms that may not exist anywhere else on Earth. The accretion ice (lake water frozen to the bottom of the lower surface of the glacier) has preserved microbial samples from each region of Lake Vostok as the glacier passes over and into the lake. Thus, without contaminating the lake with microorganisms from the surface, microbes originating from the lake can be collected, transported to the laboratory and studied. Two of the deepest ice cores sections in this project are part of the international allocation.

The will be shared between four researchers (Sergey Bulat from Russia, Jean-Robert Petit and Daniel Prieur from France, Scott Rogers from USA). The United States team will study, isolate, and characterize bacteria, fungi, and viruses that have been sampled from the lake through the process of ice accretion to the lower surface of 3500+m thick glacier overriding the lake. The project will involve a suite of methods, including molecular, morphological, and cultural. This includes observation and description by fluorescence, light, and electron microscopy, isolation on thirteen separate cultural media, polymerase chain reaction amplification, DNA sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. Eleven accretion ice core sections, as well as two glacial ice core sections. As well as two glacial ice core sections will be studied. The accretion ice core sections, as well as two glacial ice core sections will be studied. The accretion ice core sections represent all of the major regions of the lake that have been sampled by the accretion process in the vicinity of the Vostok 5G ice core. The broader impacts of the work relate to the impact the results will have on the filed. These long=isolated lakes, deep below the Antarctic ice sheet may contain novel uniquely adapted organisms. Glacial ice contains an enormous diversity of entrapped microbes, some of which may be metabolically active in the ice. The microbes from Lake Vostok are of special interest, since they are adapted to cold, dark, and high pressure. Thus, their enzyme systems and biochemical pathways may be significantly different from those in the microbes that are the subject of current studies. As such, these organisms may form compounds that may have useful applications. Also, study of the accretion ice, and eventually the water, from Lake Vostok will provide a basis for the study of other subglacial lakes. Additionally, study of the microbes in the accretion ice will be useful to those planning to study analogous systems on ice-covered planets and moons.
POINT(106.8 -72.4667)
Antarctica; Biota; Cryosphere; Glaciers/ice Sheet; Glaciers/Ice Sheet; Glaciology; Hydrothermal Vent; Lake Vostok; Microbes; Subglacial Lake
0230260 Bender, Michael
POINT(106.8 -72.4667)
Tue, 10 Jul 2007 00:00:00 GMT
This data set includes a time scale for the Vostok ice core, retrieved from Vostok Station on the East Antarctic Plateau. This chronology is derived by orbitally tuning to molecular oxygen to nitrogen (O2/N2) ratios in occluded air for depths deeper than 1550 m (greater than 112,000 years old), and by gas correlation to the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) chronology for the ice core section that is shallower than 1422 m (less than 102,000 years old). Because of poor gas preservation in air bubbles in shallower depths, investigators could only constrain the Vostok chronology for the section deeper than 1550 m by O2/N2. 2022-07-24 | Blankenship, Donald D.; Young, Duncan A.; Kempf, Scott D. | No project link provided | These data represent the 1-km decimated version of the SOAR ice thickness data provided to the Bedmap2 project, collected as part of various projects between 1991 and 2001. It encompasses the Corridor Aerogeophysics of the South East Ross Zone (CASERTZ) surveys of the Byrd Subglacial Basin (BSB), Bindschadler Ice Stream (WAZ/TKD), and the upstream catchments of Kamb Ice Steam and Willians Ice Stream (IRE); targeted West Antarctic glaciology projects (IPB/WAZ/DVD/STI/LIV); corridors across the Transantarctic Mountains to South Pole (PPT) and Dome C (WLK); and a version of the Lake Vostok dataset (LVS). Data were collected as stacked log detected traces by the SOAR TUD IV system with an attached digitizer. The digitizer was significantly updated in 1997 (RTZ6). Data interpretation approaches can be found in Blankenship et al., 2001. Data is in ASCII format. Transects are separated by GMT style segment headers with the transect name. Columns are: 1. Year 2. Day of Year 3. Seconds of Day 4. Longitude (degrees, WGS-84) 5. Latitude (degrees, WGS-84) 6. Easting (meters, EPSG 3031; Polar Stereographic with true scale at 71˚S) 7. Northing (meters, EPSG 3031; Polar Stereographic with true scale at 71˚S) 8. Surface Elevation (meters, WGS-84) - derived where possible from laser data 9. Ice thickness (meters, using a speed of light in air of 299705000 m/s and a refractive index of 1.78; no firn correction) 10. Bed Elevation (meters, WGS-84) - column 8 minus column 9 11. Collaborative Research: Dating and Paleoenvironmental Studies on Ancient Ice in the Dry Valleys, Antarctica |
This project studies ancient ice buried in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. The ice, which may approach ten million years in age, will be dated using argon and uranium radioisotope techniques. High-risk work, if successful it will offer the first and perhaps only samples of the Earth's atmosphere from millions of years in the past. These samples could offer critically important tests of paleoclimate records and proxies, as well as a glimpse into the characteristics of a past world much like the predicted future, warmer Earth. The broader impacts are graduate student education, and potentially contributing to society's understanding of global climate change and sea level rise. | ["POLYGON((-180 -72.6,-176.887 -72.6,-173.774 -72.6,-170.661 -72.6,-167.548 -72.6,-164.435 -72.6,-161.322 -72.6,-158.209 -72.6,-155.096 -72.6,-151.983 -72.6,-148.87 -72.6,-148.87 -73.533,-148.87 -74.466,-148.87 -75.399,-148.87 -76.332,-148.87 -77.265,-148.87 -78.198,-148.87 -79.131,-148.87 -80.064,-148.87 -80.997,-148.87 -81.93,-151.983 -81.93,-155.096 -81.93,-158.209 -81.93,-161.322 -81.93,-164.435 -81.93,-167.548 -81.93,-170.661 -81.93,-173.774 -81.93,-176.887 -81.93,180 -81.93,174.335 -81.93,168.67 -81.93,163.005 -81.93,157.34 -81.93,151.675 -81.93,146.01 -81.93,140.345 -81.93,134.68 -81.93,129.015 -81.93,123.35 -81.93,123.35 -80.997,123.35 -80.064,123.35 -79.131,123.35 -78.198,123.35 -77.265,123.35 -76.332,123.35 -75.399,123.35 -74.466,123.35 -73.533,123.35 -72.6,129.015 -72.6,134.68 -72.6,140.345 -72.6,146.01 -72.6,151.675 -72.6,157.34 -72.6,163.005 -72.6,168.67 -72.6,174.335 -72.6,-180 -72.6))"] | ["POINT(167.24 -77.265)"] | false | false |

Collaborative Research: Deciphering the Deep Ice and the Ice-water Interface over Lake Vostok Using Existing Radar Data |
This data set provides a modeled radar attenuation rate profile, showing the predicted contributions from pure ice and impurities to radar attenuation at the Vostok 5G ice core site in Antarctica, as well as the total attenuation rate and its formal uncertainty. The model data are based on borehole temperature logs, concentrations of major soluble ions measured from melted ice core samples, and information about the electrical conductivity of ice. Attenuation rates and their spatial variability are important constraints for radar studies of ice sheets. Parameters include depth, total attenuation rate, and attenuation rate contribution from pure ice, acidity, and salinity. Collaborative Research: Deciphering the Deep Ice and the Ice-water Interface over Lake Vostok Using Existing Radar Data |
This data set consists of inferred accumulation rates from three radar layers (26, 35 and 41 thousand years old) in the Vostok Subglacial Lake region. Accumulation rates were inferred using Local-Layer Approximation (LLA), which assumes that the strain-rate history of a particle traveling through the ice sheet can be approximated by the vertical strain-rate profile at the current position of the particle, which the researchers assume to be uniform. Parameters include location, in latitude and longitude, polar stereographic coordinates, and local grid X and Y coordinates, along with layer age, in thousands of years (ka), and inferred accumulation rate (cm/a). The data cover a 150 by 350 km area. Comprehensive Biological Study of Vostok Accretion Ice |
The large subglacial Lake Vostok in Antarctica is unique ecological site with a novel microbial biota. | ["POINT(106.8 -72.4667)"] | ["POINT(106.8 -72.4667)"] | false | false |

Collaborative Research: Trapped Gas Composition and the Chronology of the Vostok Ice Core |
Thus for the shallower section of the core, they synchronized the Vostok delta oxygen-18 (δ18O) and methane (CH4) measurements to those of the GISP2 to obtain the chronology (see Bender, et al. 2006). Note, CH4 data are not included in this data set. Investigators analyzed the O2/N2 and the δ18O record ratios for approximately the past 115,000 to 400,000 years in the Vostok ice core. They combined new measurements for O2/N2 and δ18O with data from Bender (2002) and Petit, et al. (1999), respectively. Data are in Microsoft Excel format and are available via FTP. | ["POINT(106.8 -72.4667)"] | ["POINT(106.8 -72.4667)"] | false | false |

In January 1998, the collaborative ice-drilling project between Russia, the United States, and France at the Russian Vostok station in East Antarctica yielded the deepest ice core ever recovered, reaching a depth of 3,623 m. Preliminary data indicate the Vostok ice-core record extends through four climate cycles, with ice slightly older than 400 kyr. | [] | [] | false | false |
