However, there remains incomplete understanding how the shape of the seafloor can impact the overturning circulation and the carbon transported by it. Recent theoretical work has suggested that there will be upwelling hotspots downstream of undersea ridges, evidenced by localized carbon outgassing hotspots in models and mapped-data products. However, there has been no direct evidence of localized outgassing near bathymetric features so far. This project will use novel analyses that combine ocean dynamics with corresponding biological and chemical oceanographic observations to more completely account for outgassing and better constrain the global carbon budget, of which the Southern Ocean plays a large role. In addition, a better understanding of the three-dimensional nature of the Southern Ocean\u0027\u0027s overturning circulation will help improve predictions of ocean transport, which affects large-scale weather patterns, the yield of fisheries and the melting of the polar ice caps. This work provides broader impacts in two categories, supporting junior scientists through workforce development and promoting research infrastructure by developing new open numerical code that can be used by many research groups. This project proposes to investigate the patterns of carbon outgassing in the Southern Ocean and its connection to the three-dimensional meridional overturning pathways using the Biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate (B-SOSE), a model that assimilates most available observations with the model physics in a self-consistent and conserving manner. The project will first construct an Eulerian isopycnal carbon budget to investigate local carbon outgassing. Then they will use a complementary Lagrangian analysis of the thickness-weighted velocities mapping the three-dimensional pathways of the overturning circulation, critical for interpreting the carbon budget. Finally, the project compare B-SOSE model output and wave glider and autonomous float data at the Southwest Indian Ridge using a suite of \u2018virtual\u2019 deployments to understand why outgassing hotspots have not yet been seen in float data. The net of these in turn modulate global climate, sea level rise and global circulation. This project continues the field development of a surface autonomous vehicle (https://www.liquid-robotics.com/wave-glider/overview/ ) to better measure and study these processes in the remote Southern Ocean, where continuous data is otherwise very difficult to obtain. Mobile autonomous surface vehicles, powered by sunlight and wave action provide a very cost effective manner of solving the problem of obtaining unattended observational coverage in the remote Southern Ocean. The project will support ongoing education and outreach efforts by the PIs including school presentations, visits to science centers and the development of educational materials. The WaveGlider has an established track record of navigating successful spatial surveys and positioned time series measurements in otherwise inhospitable waters and sea-states. The study includes the addition of some new measurement capabilities such as an (upper mixed) layer profiling CTD winch, a high frequency acoustic Doppler turbulence system, and a biogeochemical chlorophyll fluorescence sensor. This augmented instrumentation package will be used for a set of Austral summer season experiments observing ocean-shelf exchange along with frontal air-sea interactions in the vicinity of the West Antarctic Peninsula. Rapid changes are currently ongoing in the polar regions in response to interactions between the air, ocean, and sea-ice. Despite their importance, air-sea interactions at high latitudes remain poorly understood, in great part due to the observational challenges inherent to this extreme and remote environment. The overarching objective of this project is to develop and test a new generation of autonomous ocean platforms specifically designed to withstand the harsh polar environment, to enable improved understanding and quantification of fine-scale air-sea fluxes in these key regions of the globe. Doing so will enable the research community to advance observational capabilities of under-sampled high-latitude oceans while being respectful of the environment and local communities. Compared to research vessels, our wave-propelled platforms (\u201dWave Gliders\u201d) produce a very low acoustic footprint, minimizing behavioral impact to marine mammals such as whales and seals, who are highly affected by underwater noise pollution generated by classical research vessels. Researchers will develop and test advanced capabilities added to existing, off-the-shelf platforms to operate in the extreme conditions of the high latitude oceans in order to understand how the ocean transfers heat and momentum to the atmosphere at fine scales. To accomplish this goal, instrumented Wave Gliders will first be upgraded with state-of-the-art technology for propulsion, energy generation and storage, anti-icing, and a scientific payload capable of operating for long durations in polar oceans. This new technology will be implemented and tested in the Air-Sea Interaction Laboratory and the recently completed SOARS facility at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. This facility is capable of developing a polar wave glider, as it can incorporate sea ice and freezing sea spray similar to real world conditions. The validation of the instrumented autonomous vehicles will be conducted during multiple short deployments, initially off La Jolla, CA with a final deployment in the Southern Ocean in polar conditions. Students from local robotics programs will participate in both the development and testing of the polar wave glider.
